Wedding Gifts

Four characters the Chinese tradition has used to bless marriages for centuries.

The picks

A wedding gift should outlast the centerpieces. These four characters are the classical Chinese ways of saying the things every couple secretly wants said about them.

喜 (Xǐ) — Joy / Double Happiness

The defining wedding character. The doubled form 囍 has decorated Chinese marriages for centuries. A single 喜 carries the same wish without the kitsch.

爱 (Ài) — Love

For when only the simplest word will do. 爱 is the character every Chinese child learns first, and the one every grown couple returns to.

和 (Hé) — Harmony

For couples whose love is built on listening. 和 is the marriage that is also a friendship — two voices that fit.

福 (Fú) — Blessing

The character every Chinese family hangs at every threshold of life. For a wedding, 福 is a wish for the years ahead — health, comfort, and the good fortune of building a home together.
